Shibu Jose Joins Global Council Of The World Agriculture Forum (WAF)
Indian American agroforestry scientist Shibu Jose has been named a member of the Global Council of the World Agriculture Forum (WAF), envisioning a transformative future for global agriculture defined by boundless innovation, productivity and unwavering sustainability.
As a Global Council member, Jose’s insights will guide strategic priorities and steer the Forum’s initiatives, ensuring WAF remains a vanguard of progress in addressing the most pressing challenges in farming and global agriculture, including trade and agribusinesses, according to a University of Missouri media release.
Jose’s involvement will include setting the agenda for meaningful change, engaging with key stakeholders and advocating for policies that will transform farming practices and food systems for a food- and nutrition-secure world.
Based in the Netherlands, WAF aims to serve as a dynamic platform connecting regional and global partners to enhance trade, foster cooperation and equip farmers with advanced skills and technologies. Through these efforts, WAF seeks to boost productivity and expand market access while driving high-tech, value-added agricultural solutions to meet the world’s evolving challenges.
Jose serves as associate dean of research and director of the Missouri Agricultural Experiment Station in the College of Agriculture, Food and Natural Resources at the University of Missouri. Previously, he was the director of the School of Natural Resources at the University of Missouri.
He has also served as the H.E. Garrett Endowed Chair Professor and director of the Center for Agroforestry at the University of Missouri (2009-2017) and Professor of Forest Ecology at the School of Forest Resources and Conservation at the University of Florida (1998-2009) in the past.
Jose received his bachelor’s degree from Kerala Agricultural University, India, and his master’s degree and doctorate degree from the College of Agriculture at Purdue University.
He has received $56 million in funding ($16 million as PI), published eleven edited books and 250 research articles with nearly 14,700 citations, and delivered over 320 presentations, including 70 invited international talks.
Jose has led major interdisciplinary research projects involving agronomists, plant breeders, soil scientists, animal scientists, natural resource scientists and socio-economists. His economic development activities have led to several invention disclosures, one licensed patent, one licensed trademark and two startup companies.
Jose is a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and the Society of American Foresters. He has received numerous awards for research, including the highest honor for forest biology research (Barrington Moore Memorial Award) from the Society of American Foresters and the Scientific Achievement Award from the International Union of Forest Research Organizations (IUFRO).
He has also received the inaugural (2018) Partner in Leadership Advancement Award from the University of Missouri and the Distinguished Alumni Award from the College of Agriculture, Purdue University.
Jose has served as Editor-In-Chief of Agroforestry Systems (2008-2022), the premier journal in the field of agroforestry, published by Springer-Nature, and on the editorial board of several other journals. He is the chair of the Forestry Research Advisory Council that advises the U.S. Secretary of Agriculture.
